A Massachusetts transplant center is offering a $5,000 “hair transplant” for people with bald spots, if they’ve received a facial transplant.
The program, which has not been announced publicly, is designed to help patients who have lost their hair due to surgery or chemotherapy.
The procedure involves the removal of the hair follicles in the scalp and is performed in a clinic at New Britain Medical Center in Lowell, Mass.
It’s similar to a facial reconstruction surgery, which can cost between $10,000 and $20,000, according to a press release.
The transplant is offered in an effort to help people with hair loss, said Lisa Wylie, director of transplant programs for the center.
“We’re trying to make it easier for people who are really struggling to get the hair transplant done,” she said.
The treatment requires about three weeks of physical therapy and the transplant will be performed by a local dermatologist.
Wyl, who is a native of the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border, said she’s received positive feedback from the patients who were given the transplant.
“I’m thrilled,” Wyl said.
“I’ve had a lot of good feedback, and the hair that I have is perfect for my daughter.”
The program was launched in March by New Britain and Massachusetts General Hospital, according the press release, and is open to any bald person.
